The Journey

  • March 01, 2013

This video – cut together from behind-the-scenes footage captured during production of my first film CATCHING OUT – is a reminder of how I became a documentary filmmaker.

When I watch The Journey I’m amazed at how young I am! On one hand I ask myself – what was I thinking? But the other part of me remembers that purity of intent that comes before you encounter all the stumbling blocks along the way. Sure, I’m a savvier filmmaker now that I’ve been through the school of hard knocks, but I find myself a little smitten by the sincerity expressed by that younger me. I can’t help but wonder – if I met her now, what would I tell her?

I often say I became a filmmaker and a trainhopper at the same time. The Journey shows me learning the ropes of both endeavors. I’m so happy to be able to look back and draw inspiration from that fearless young woman. I hope maybe she inspires others too?

I’m also more than just a little in awe of my amazing crew. There is absolutely no way I’ve thanked them enough for their good humor and grace under pressure – not only those who joined me during that first stint of shooting but everyone who contributed their time and talent during the making of CATCHING OUT. I imagine I’m more humbled now that I was then. So let me say it again: THANK YOU.
